Nate had finally fallen asleep. He was awakened by Hoot placing his foot against his ribs and shoving him out of bed. He hit the floor with a solid thump. The sun had gone down, so the room was almost completely dark, lit only by a turned-low lamp on the bedside table, and light spilling from the businesses across the street coming through the open window.

“Ow! What’d you go and do that for, Hoot?” Nate exclaimed.

“I’ve been yellin’ your name and shakin’ your shoulder for nigh onto half an hour now,” Hoot answered. “If you hadn’t been snorin’ so loud, I’d have figured you were dead. Kickin’ you outta bed was the only way I could wake you up. Didn’t hurt you, did I?”

“I dunno.” Nate sat up, then slowly came to his feet. He rubbed a sore spot on his backside. “Seems like I landed mostly on my butt. But I ain’t got a heckuva lot of padding back there. Might’ve bruised somethin’. Not bad, though.”

“Hey, if I’d realized you were gonna land on your brains I wouldn’t have shoved you outta bed,” Hoot answered.

“Real funny, Hoot,” Nate grumbled. “In fact, it’s so hilarious I’m gonna fall on the floor and die laughin’.”

“Hilarious? That one of those two dollar Eastern words?”

“I don’t know if it’s only an Eastern word. Just another way of sayin’ funny.”

“Ties my tongue up too much. I reckon I’ll stick with funny.”

“Never mind that. Why’d you wake me up? I was havin’ a real fine dream.”

“Care to tell me about it?”

“I guess. It was about a girl back home. Becky Palmer.”

“Ooh, Becky Palmer. Sounds real pretty.”

“She is real pretty. Blonde hair, bright blue eyes, cute little nose.”

“Was she your gal?”

“I’m not gonna tell you. A gentleman doesn’t talk about a fine girl like Becky that way.”

“In other words, she wasn’t. Besides, you sure ain’t no gentleman. An Eastern tenderfoot, yeah, but a gentleman? Not a chance. Well, never mind about your Becky Palmer. There’s plenty of gals even prettier’n her right here in Texas. That means they’re a lot closer than Wilmington, Delaware. I reckon I’ll have to find you one. Not that you’ll know what to do with her when I do.”

“I’d try and remember Jeb’s advice when he was teaching me how to shoot a gun. I’d go easy and squeeze.”

“Sure you would. And then you’d get slapped for your trouble,” Hoot said, laughing.

“You have a girl, Hoot?”

“Lots of ’em, all over Texas.”

“I’m not buyin’ that.”

“You’ll find out. Gals love men with a badge. Us Rangers can have the pick of just about any woman we want.” Hoot hurried to change the subject. “But enough talk about women. Reason I woke you up is, I’m plumb starved. We never did get our dinner. I figure you’re probably about ready for supper too.”

Nate started to point out that he and Hoot didn’t actually wear badges, but thought better of it. “I could stand something to eat,” he admitted. “Still want to try that place
